Why a split newborn photoshoots works so well

Split sessions are fantastic if you are outdoorsy parents, have a dog or ...have older children! Being outside gives older siblings the space to explore, play, and let their personalities shine. These moments of natural movement and joy are impossible to stage and often result in some of my favourite photos from the session - laughing, running, twirling, or simply walking hand-in-hand with their new sibling. Bring your furry friend along, explore your garden, a nearby park, a farm, or a wildflower meadow — these outdoor moments will be relaxed, playful, and completely natural.

Here’s the important part: the outdoor portion is always in addition to your home session, not instead of it. The in-home part captures those intimate, tiny newborn moments — the cuddles on the bed, sleepy poses, nursery you worked so hard on, naked baby bum in dads big arms and gentle family interactions that can’t be replicated anywhere else. The outdoor part is a bonus: joyful, full of light, colour, and life. It complements the home images, it doesn’t replace them.

How do these split newborn photoshoots work?

Both parts of a split newborn session happen on the same day, back to back. Some families prefer to start at home and finish with a walk outside, while others like to tackle the “more challenging bit” first - yes, getting out of the house with a newborn! - and then settle back home without having to go out again. It’s completely up to you where we begin; there’s no right or wrong way.
