5 reasons why family photoshoots in autumn are THE BEST.

Imagine this: you’re walking through a carpet of crunchy autumn leaves, your children running ahead, scooping them up, tossing them in the air, laughing so hard their cheeks turn pink. You’re joining in too, because who can resist a good leaf fight? The air is fresh, the colours are breath taking, and you feel autumn wrapping you in its cosy, golden glow. You spot mushrooms and conkers, balance on fallen trees, By the time the photoshoot is done, you’ll all be full of energy, joy, and ready... for a hearty lunch in the nearby pub (which I will recommend), long bath and a good night’s sleep.

And in between leaf fights and muddy wellies, I’ll capture the little things that mean the most: twirling your daughter until she’s dizzy with giggles, playing peekaboo with your toddler, carrying your son high on your shoulders while he points to the tallest trees. It’s not about stiff poses or “smile for the camera” moments, it’s about cuddles, laughs, and the playful chaos that makes autumn family photos so special. You’ll come away with photos that remind you of this magical time as a family, and you’ll be in them too!

Here are my 5 reasons why autumn is perfect for outdoor family photoshoots in Worcestershire:

1. Stunning autumn colours

Autumn only gives us a short window - about 5 weeks - where the leaves are at their peak. Each outdoor family photoshoot is unique because the colours and weather are never exactly the same twice. From deep reds to golden yellows, Worcestershire transforms into a photographer’s dream, and I know secret spots as well as the classic favourites that make every session extra special. I know a beech wood known to dog walkers, which turns golden yellow. We may meet 2 other people during the shoot, we may meet no one! The forest floor is full of leaves waiting to be thrown around, and sun rays peek through the tree canopies. Or we can go to a famous arboretum near Kidderminster, which is breath-taking (but busy at weekends). Arboretums feature a huge number and selection of trees so you can expect an incredible transformation of autumn colours, providing a stunning backdrop for your photos. Believe me, the journey to this arboretum (approximately 40 minutes from Worcester) and the reasonable entrance fee are absolutely worthwhile for the stunning backdrop and memorable experience it offers. Did I mention there is a café overlooking the lake? Don’t discount Worcester itself for your family photos though! There are 2 parks I adore, with colourful trees just waiting for you…no need to travel far or own a car, to find beautiful autumn…it’s often right at your doorstep!

2. Perfect temperatures for a fun photoshoot outdoors!

Not too hot, not too cold - autumn is ideal for being outside without getting sweaty or shivery. Jumpers, cardigans, and layers add texture and cosiness to your photos. While mid-morning or midday often works for families with young children, it can be far from ideal during a hot summer day! Squinting, harsh shadows, and sweat make it tricky for kids and parents alike. Photographers don’t love it either - in fact, midday summer sun is one of the worst times to shoot! Autumn, on the other hand, is forgiving: the sun isn’t as harsh, the air is pleasantly warm, and the light is soft and golden, giving your outdoor family photos that magical, natural glow...

3. Kids will be talking about the photoshoot long after it’s over.

Outdoor family photoshoots in autumn give children space to run, jump in leaves, chase each other, and discover nature - whether it’s mushrooms, sticks, or digging in the leaves! These are the moments that show their personalities and capture those genuine smiles. The best photos come from play, freedom, and authentic joy, and autumn provides the perfect backdrop for all of it! Kids are happiest when they’re being silly, exploring the world, and just being kids... so let me take you to a stunning place where they can do just that, and I'll take some incredible photos for you to cherish for many years after. Trust your experienced Worcester photographer and a nature-loving mum of a 4 year old boy :)

4. Absolutely magical light for your family photos.

Autumn sunsets and sunrises have that warm, golden glow that makes photos feel timeless. Shadows are soft, the sun sits lower in the sky, and even brief showers can create the most dramatic, magical backdrops. It’s the perfect opportunity to capture golden hour magic without the mid-summer heat.

5. Gifts sorted before the festive rush!

By having your family photoshoot in autumn, you’ll receive your images well before the Christmas rush. It’s a great way to tick something off your list and celebrate the season...and you’ll have tangible memories of playful moments, cuddles, and joy that you can display and treasure all year round! I bet you didn't think about it, right?
